Google
Instant comes to a browser near you this week with the new feature that
provides search results while typing in your search terms. The company estimates that the typical user
will save approximately between 2 to 5 seconds for each search. Google Instant will be available starting
this week in the US, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and France. Internet browsers that will be supported
include Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3, Safari 5, and Chrome 5 and 6. A mobile version will be rolled out later
this fall.
According to
Marissa Mayer, Google’s VP of search and user experience, state that with
Google Instant, search results are made available “before you type”, as the
product actually anticipates and automatically fills in the search terms. The company predicts that internet connection
performance will not be substantially affected by using Google Instant because
the data delivered is relatively small in size. It takes advantage of the fact that people
can read faster than they can type. The
cumulative time savings adds up to 3.5 billion seconds or 11 hours per second. In the US, the instant results format will
be the standard for users. Google
Instant fits into the company’s tradition of constantly improving the search
experience with faster and relevant search results.
