Your favorite movie may be available at home on YouTube sooner than you think.  Apparently talks are currently underway between major motion picture studios and Google regarding making a catalog of Hollywood favorite films available on a pay-per-view basis by the end of 2010 according to the Financial Times.    The on-demand streaming service will provide the movies for $5 per viewing based on reports from those are familiar with Google’s plans.  When a  YouTube representative was asked about possible developments the response was that, “We have nothing to announce at this time."

The competition for on-demand movies is heating up as the technology for providing on-line entertainment has matured.  Apple (AppleTV) has recently struck its own 5 year $1 billion digital-video service deal with Netflix.  Meanwhile it is reported that the Hulu online video service may go public now that it has secured agreements with NBC Universal, Walt Disney, and News Corp. In 2009 Google announced its intention to develop payment mechanisms for the YouTube site.   The first reports of discussions between Hollywood studios and YouTube were initially reported in late 2009.   YouTube began to test the waters working with the Sundance Film Festival by offering five festival films available for rent on temporary basis in early 2010.
