A Federal U.S. judge has granted Microsoft’s request for a court order against one of the most infamous sources of internet spam the Waledac botnet, while will allow it to cut of 277 associated domains.   The action is expected to wipe out the command and control servers utilized by cybercriminals to control hundreds of thousands of infected PCs.  It is most commonly believed that Waledec botnet is the work of Eastern European spammers which is capable of generated 1.5 billion spam messages per day.

The lawsuit which was filed on Monday makes the case that VeriSign manages the .com and controls a choke-point for the botnet. The court action orders VeriSign to take action to remove the botnet internet domains.   Microsoft was took precautions to take the legal action without tipping of botnet managers, so that they did not have time to react.   "That unplugging of the Internet connection had to be done without him knowing," stated Richard Boscovich, a senior attorney at Microsoft's digital crimes unit, in a blog post.
